Dabrowski's Overexcitabilities (OE)
The 'Intense' way 2e individuals experience the world: Psychomotor, Sensual, Intellectual, Imaginational, and Emotional OEs.
The 5 Domains of Intensity
According to Polish psychiatrist Kazimierz Dabrowski, gifted and 2e individuals don't just perceive the world "faster"; they perceive it more "intensely." This "Overexcitability" (OE) is a core part of the neurological operating system.
The Five Overexcitabilities:
1. Psychomotor: High energy, rapid speech, and a physical need for motion. This isn't just "hyperactivity"; it's a way the brain processes intense thought.
2. Sensual: A heightened awareness of all senses. This can range from the ecstasy of a beautiful painting to the physical pain of a loud siren.
3. Intellectual: The classic "Why?" child. A relentless drive for logic, truth, and solving complex puzzles.
4. Imaginational: A mind filled with vivid imagery, complex fiction, and the ability to visualize abstract concepts in 3D.
5. Emotional: Depth of feeling that can be overwhelming. High sensitivity to the emotional states of others and a profound sense of morality.
