Core Emotional Needs and Neurodivergence
Identifying the 5 fundamental emotional needs and how they are often unमेट in the lives of neurodivergent people.
The Emotional Nourishment Gap
In Schema Therapy, we believe that mental health is a result of meeting 5 Core Emotional Needs. For neurodivergent people, these needs are often chronically frustrated by the environment.
1. Secure Attachment: Feeling safe and loved even when you are "messy" or "forgetful."
2. Autonomy: The ability to act according to your own brain-map. (e.g., being allowed to fidget while listening).
3. Freedom of Expression: Being able to say *"I am overwhelmed"* without being called "dramatic."
4. Spontaneity and Play: The right to follow your hyper-focus and interests without shame.
5. Realistic Limits: Getting the "Scaffolding" (lists, timers, help) you need to interact with the world successfully.
If these needs aren't met, the brain builds Schemas (like "Defectiveness" or "Failure") to survive. Healing involves recognizing these needs and finally giving them to yourself.
