Communication Accidents: The 'Social Crash' Guide
Why we say the wrong thing, miss the vibe, or offend people without meaning to—and how to 'Repair' the damage.
Why did I say that?
In the ADHD and AuDHD world, Communication Accidents are a frequent occurrence. Sometimes the "social filter" is bypassed by speed, and other times the Autistic literalness misses the "vibe" of the room.
Common 'Crashes':
The 'Expert' Crash: You correct someone's minor fact because you value Truth over Flow. They see you as arrogant; you were just being helpful.
The 'Topic-Stealing' Crash: You use anecdotal empathy to share a story. They see it as you ignoring their feelings to talk about yourself.
The 'Blunt' Crash: You give a direct answer to a question. They see it as "mean"; you were just being efficient.
The 'Clean Repair' Method:
When you realize you've "crashed," own it immediately: *"Hey, I think I just had a social crash. I realized what I said sounded blunt—I didn't mean it that way. I'm actually really interested in what you're saying."* Acknowledging the "intent-vs-impact" gap saves relationships.
