Chunking: Breaking Tasks into Pieces
How to use 'Nano-Steps' to bypass the brain's overwhelm response when facing large projects.
Atomic Tasks
For the ADHD brain, a task like "Clean the Garage" is a nightmare. It's too big, too vague, and has too many steps. We experience Task Paralysis before we even pick up a box.
The Solution is Chunking:
1. Atomize: Break it down until the first step is ridiculously easy. Instead of "Clean," write: "Open the garage door."
2. The 10-Minute Limit: If a sub-task takes more than 10 minutes, break it down again.
3. Visual Sequence: Write these tiny steps on a physical list. When you cross off "Open door," "Find trash bag," and "Pick up 3 cans," your brain receives 3 small hits of Dopamine.
This tricks the brain into staying in "Action Mode" instead of "Panic Mode."
