Chronic Lateness and Time Perception
Understanding- Time-Blindness: Why we are 'Always 5 minutes late' even when we try our hardest.
Why We Can't 'Feel' Time
Dr. Russell Barkley famously says that ADHD is a "Disorder of Time." While others have an "Internal Clock" that ticks in the background, yours is often "Broken" or "Paused."
When you get into Hyper-focus, 4 hours feels like 4 minutes. When you are bored, 4 minutes feels like 4 hours.
The Chronic Lateness Solution:
1. Don't Use Digital Clocks: Digital clocks (10:45) are "Data," not "Time." Use Analog Clocks (with hands) or Visual Timers (red sliver). These allow you to "See" how much of the hour is "Gone."
2. The '15-Minute' Buffer: Whatever your brain says a task takes, Double it. If you think it takes 5 minutes to leave the house, the "ADHD Truth" is usually 15.
3. Auditory Pokes: Set an alarm for 10 minutes *before* you need to leave. This "Poke" breaks the Hyper-focus and allows you to start the slow process of "Task Switching."
