Child's Tantrum, My Meltdown: The Sensory Mirror
Managing- your own overstimulation while parenting a dysregulated child.
When Two Nervous Systems Clash
Parenting is the ultimate "Executive Function" test. When your child has a Tantrum (behavioral) or a Meltdown (sensory), it produces a literal physical attack on your nervous system.
If you have ADHD or Autism, that high-pitched crying isn't just "annoying"—it is Painful. Your body reacts as if there is a fire. You want to yell, hide, or escape.
How to break the mirror:
1. Dampen the Noise: Put on *Loop* earplugs or noise-cancelling headphones the moment the crying starts. You can still hear them, but the "Pain Edge" is gone.
2. Declare Your State: Say out loud (even to a toddler): *"Mommy's brain is feeling very loud right now. I need to take 3 deep breaths before I can help you."*
3. Co-Regulation: Once you are calm, your calm nervous system acts as a "Tuning Fork" for theirs.
