Autistic Identity: Finding Yourself After Diagnosis
The process of identity reconstruction for late-diagnosed (especially adult) autistic individuals: the ongoing phase of acceptance, community involvement, and the answer to the question ''Why was my life so difficult?''
Late Diagnosis and the Identity Earthquake
Receiving an autism diagnosis in adulthood often triggers an identity "earthquake." While the initial reaction can sometimes be shock and denial, it eventually transitions into a process of relief and understanding: "This explains why my life felt so complicated."
Many late-diagnosed individuals "re-read" their pre-diagnosis lives retrospectively: the challenges in school, burnout at work, and misunderstandings in relationships. This re-reading can be both painful and deeply liberating.
Connecting with the community is a critical stage in the construction of an autistic identity. Platforms led by autistic voices, such as ASAN, carry the vital knowledge that "I am not alone and these experiences are real." This sense of belonging is the ultimate catalyst for identity development.
