Adult Emotional Reactivity
Managing- 'The Explosive Moment': Why ADHD adults feel emotions 10x stronger and how to build an 'Emotional Brake.'
The 0-to-100 Phenomenon
In the ADHD brain, the connection between the Limbic System (Emotions) and the Prefrontal Cortex (The Brake) is "Thin."
When a "Normal" person gets annoyed, their "Brake" says: *"Take a breath, it's just a small mistake."* When an ADHD person gets annoyed, the emotion floods the brain before the "Brake" even wakes up. You go from "Quiet" to "Rage" or "Crying" in seconds.
Strategies for the Reactivity:
1. The '10-Second' Buffer: If you feel the "Heat" rising, you MUST leave the room. Your "Thinking brain" is currently Offline. You cannot "Solve" the problem until the "Heat" goes down.
2. Naming the Emotion: Say it out loud. *"I am feeling a massive wave of Shame right now."* Paradoxically, naming the emotion helps your Prefrontal Cortex "Regrasp" control.
3. The 'Not-Personal' Reframe: Ask: *"Is this a 'Real' problem, or is this my 'ADHD Brain' over-reacting to a sensory poke?"*
