ADHD and Romantic Relationships
Understanding how ADHD traits like distraction and impulsivity interact with intimacy and long-term partnership.
Bridging the Romantic Gap
In an ADHD relationship, the greatest challenge is the "Transition from Novelty to Routine." Because the ADHD brain thrives on dopamine, the early stages of dating are easy. The partner is a "Special Interest."
Once the relationship stabilizes, the routine tasks of life (bills, chores, predictable nights) can make the ADHD partner feel "bored" or "stuck." To the non-ADHD partner, this looks like a withdrawal of love. It's not. It's just a biological return to baseline.
Strategy: Keep the novelty alive through "Micro-Dating." Don't wait for anniversaries. Change the scene, try a new restaurant, or start a new hobby together to keep the shared dopamine flowing.
