ADHD and Future Projection
Why the ADHD brain struggles to 'see' the future and how to build a visual roadmap for your goals.
The 'Now' vs. 'Not Now' Divide
According to Dr. Russell Barkley, ADHD is essentially a "disability of time." While most people can "see" the future and feel its consequences, the ADHD brain lives in a permanent state of The Now.
If a reward (like a promotion) or a consequence (like a late fee) is "Not Now," it doesn't have enough dopamine value to trigger action.
The Solution: Exteriorize the Future.
You cannot wait to "feel" the future; you must see it.
Visual Maps: Use a giant physical wall calendar where months are visible at once.
Image Association: Keep a photo of your goal (e.g., your new house or a graduation cap) on your workspace.
Immediate Rewards: Give yourself a small "Now" reward (like a coffee) for doing a "Future" task.
