Achievement Identity and Self-Alienation
How 'High Performance' can become a mask that hides the authentic neurodivergent self, leading to identity crisis.
Success as a Survival Strategy
For many in the 2e and neurodivergent community, Success is the ultimate mask. If we are the best student, the hardest worker, or the most productive employee, people won't notice that we can't handle the texture of our clothes or that we are drowning in sensory noise.
This creates an Achievement Identity. We stop being a person with needs and become a "Machine of Results."
The danger is Self-Alienation. Over time, you lose the ability to feel what you actually want. You are so busy meeting "external potential" that you forget your "internal reality." When the burnout eventually comes—and it almost always does—the achievement-mask shatters, leaving you with the terrifying question: *"If I'm not the successful one, who am I?"*
True healing involves Unmasking Through Failure. It is learning that you deserve care even when you are unproductive, and that your identity is rooted in your values, not your resume.
