18 Schemas and Root Needs in Neurodiversity
How 'Maladaptive Schemas' like Defectiveness and Failure manifest specifically in ADHD and Autism.
The Shadow Stories: ND Schemas
Schema Therapy identifies 18 "Early Maladaptive Schemas"—essentially, the "Lenses" through which we see our pain. For the neurodivergent community, three schemas are almost universal:
1. Defectiveness: Because your brain processed the world differently, you were often corrected or judged. You built a story that you are "Balky" or "Broken."
2. Failure: Since academia and office life are built for NT brains, you likely experienced more "failures" (late papers, missed deadlines) than your peers. You expect to fail before you even start.
3. Social Isolation: The "Double Empathy" problem makes you feel like an alien on a strange planet. You assume no one will ever "get" you.
Healing consists of recognizing these are Schemas (Filters), not Facts.

The Root Needs of a Neuro-Brain
To heal these schemas, we must address Root Needs.
Validation: You need someone (including yourself) to say: *"It is objectively harder for you to find your keys than for others. It's okay to be frustrated."*
Autonomy: You need the freedom to solve problems your own way. If you need to fold laundry while watching a documentary—that's your right!
Structure with Heart: ND people need Scaffolding, not discipline. Structure that says *"Here is a map,"* not structure that says *"If you deviate, you are bad."*
